It seems to me that the "competitive" in this sense is about one high achievement above or at the expense of others. Ironically, when looking at the etymology of compete to Latin it is from contempere:
Late Latin competere to seek together, from Latin, to come together, agree, be suitable, from com- + petere to go to, seek
To truly be competitive, in the best sense, is to seek or put effort together towards a goal. What goes array is to do so with deceit, greed and the sad need to dominate in such a way that others are infringed upon or otherwise damaged (be it socially, economically, etc.). What we need to seek to foster is "kind competition" and fly to shared success.
yes, if we were to go back to the roots of the word this would make sense, but sadly since the 17th century the word has been associated with "rivalry" - and I think it will be hard to overcome 400 years of how the word has been used - sadly I think the together part refers to the fact that there are multiple people all striving at the same time for the same (limited) outcome.
Which is the same site as you share (which also explains that the meaning is rivalry and not togetherness)
For me, "the seeking and putting in effort together towards a goal" is collaboration... the competere seemed to suggest that people came together to seek a goal where only one could obtain that goal.
Competition is going to exist, because humans and more-than-humans compete for resources - whether it be food, sunlight, territory, status etc - so i agree kind competition would be optimal... but better still is collaboration where we come together and strive for a mutual goal that benefits all and not just the winner of the competition
(of course some winners will share their prize... bu they still have the status of winning)

and "petere" is also root to feather

According to another site, the first known use was in the early 16th century and was in the sense of rivalry
